Born in 1927 in Pontiac, Michigan, Elvin Jones began his career as a professional jazz drummer in the 1940's. Elvin Jones' style is unmistakable, his powerful and torrential drumming characterized the hard bop period and influenced most of the jazz drummers who came after. In his long career he has played drums with the greatest jazz musicians of all times, and his most well-known collaboration is with John Coltrane's Quintet, with which he achieved worldwide fame. After the experience with Coltrane, Elvin Jones played drums with Duke Ellington's Orchestra before forming his own band, Elvin Jones' Jazz Machine.
