is one of the greatest jazz drums masters of all times.
The drumming style of Philly Joe Jones has characterized the jazz hard-bop period in the 50's.
Born in Philadelphia in 1923, as a child he began to study piano and before becoming a professional drummer
he did many jobs, also performing as a singer, dancer and double bass player. In 1947 Philly Joe Jones
became the steady drummer of the Cafè Society, the New York club where he had the opportunity to play drums
with the biggest names in bebop jazz of that time.
He was called "Philly" Joe Jones for not being confused with Count Basie Orchestra's drummer Jo Jones.
From 1950 to 1958 he was the drummer of Miles Davis' Quintet, one of the most important jazz groups in music history.
Later Philly Joe Jones played drums with Bill Evans and was a founding member of the group Dameronia.
